Fridays with the ‘phins
There’s something really special about teaching yoga to student athletes. I have been spending Friday mornings with the Lemoyne womens lacrosse team as a way to get them moving off the field. Something to supplement all the hard work they put in all week long in practice. Hopefully providing some good stretching and recovery. For many of the players this is new, they are typically tight and somewhat inflexible because in their sport their muscles are constantly turned on, running, dodging, etc. Some are even dealing with injuries. The benefits of yoga for these girls are immeasurable…. encouraging them to find a safe space on their mat and for one hour give themselves the time and space to move and breathe and leave all their outside pressures and responsibilities behind.
They often start the practice tired and not so sure they wanted to get up early on their morning off the field. As they start flowing they always settle in and savor the time on their mat. Guiding them through movement and breath. It takes a very special person to play lacrosse at the level these girls do and still excel in the classroom. I tell them about the importance of finding balance and listening to your inner voice when it needs something.
All smiles at the end of practice before many of them head off to breakfast together. Team bonding at its best!!!! Go Dolphins!!!
